I´m HIV positive, says Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst

Eurovision victor and Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst has announced that she is HIV-positive, after an ex-boyfriend allegedly threatened to out her.

Conchita Wurst poses on the red carpet before the opening ceremony of the 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair on October 13, 2015.

HIV charities have rallied around the songstress, deploring however that she had been forced to reveal her diagnosis.

Wurst added: "I have been in medical treatment since I was diagnosed, and for many years [my viral load] has been under the detection limit, so I am not able to pass on the virus". Moreover, it could no longer be detected in her blood and could not be passed on.

The Eurovision victor made the decision after an ex-boyfriend threatened to go public with her status. She also wanted her loved ones to avoid the unwarranted stigma of having a relative with HIV, but said they have supported her "unconditionally since day one".

"I hope to give others courage and to take another step against the stigmatization of people who, through their own behaviour or that of others, have become infected with HIV", the singer declared.

"To my fans: the information about my HIV status may be new but my status is not!"

In her post, Wurst noted that, after years of treatment, she is now undetectable.

The 2014 Eurovision victor went on to say that the virus was no longer detectable in her blood and was not at risk of being passed on to anyone else.

She thanked fans for their support, and said she feels "stronger, more motivated and liberated than ever".

"The decision to talk openly about your HIV status should be a personal one and not taken away or ever, ever used as a threat", chief executive Ian Green said.

"I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me, threatening the health of so many others, which couldn't be further from the truth". H.I.V. might be treated with medication that lessen the viral load into a level where the immune system is healthy and the individual can not pass onto the virus.
