JD Wetherspoon pubs come off social media

Wetherspoon has more than 44,000 Twitter followers and more than 100,000 followers on Facebook

Wetherspoon has more than 44,000 Twitter followers and more than 100,000 followers on Facebook

But with social media being a key channel of communication between customer and company, what might it miss?

JDW has more than 44,000 followers on Twitter, as well as 102,902 Facebook "likes" and 98,160 Facebook followers, all of who will have to find out about their favourite Wetherspoon pubs through their websites and the pubco's magazine. At the time of publication the accounts had already been deleted.

Martin has regularly intervened in the British political scene to campaign on issues that affect his business.

Wetherspoon, whose chairman and founder Tim Martin is also a vocal champion of Britain leaving the European Union, said it was closing Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts for its head office and nearly 900 pubs in Britain and Ireland.

"The danger is that firms could lose control over the stories told and shared about them on social media, which doesn't bode well for reputation management".

Mr Martin said Wetherspoon would remain as vocal as ever, but would instead use its magazine and website as well as the press for news updates.

The social media blackout will affect the company's head office as well as the more than 900 Wetherspoons pubs in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

At the time of ditching its social media accounts, the pub chain had more than 100,000 Facebook followers and 6,000 on Instagram.

According to Tim Martin, the chairman of J D Wetherspoon, there were several reasons behind the move.

JD Wetherspoon has closed down all of its social media accounts, saying that Twitter, Facebook and Instagram encourage compulsive behaviour. "Currently we've got a massive commercial advantage because everyone else is wasting hours of their time", he responded.
