Tax deadline pushed to April 17th to honor federal holiday

One more thing, if you're still owed a refund from your 2014 taxes today marks your last chance to file and still get that money back. This year it was pushed to Tuesday, April 17, because Washington, D.C., is celebrating its emancipation holiday on Monday. One last tip, if your anxious about your taxes getting to their destination the USPS recommends you get an electronic, or physical, delivery record showing who signed for your tax return.

Returns post-marked by midnight Tuesday will be considered on time - but, as Kadas noted, the vast majority of Montana filers do so electronically, rather than through the mail.

If you have not yet filed taxes, or are considering avoiding your taxes altogether, remember that it is always best to file.

"The extension is only to file", Dejean said.

Just fill out the 4868 form and you get six months extra time, making your new tax deadline October 15th.

If you've been trying to pay your taxes on the IRS website today - the deadline for tax filing, and paying - the website is down.

Of course, you won't be paid a refund if you don't file. That means that taxpayers nationwide get a little breathing room and have until Tuesday, April 17, to get the job done. Plus, electronic filers typically get their refund faster if due one.

Online payments on are partially down.

This approach results in greater penalties and other life problems, than filing the tax return without payment.
