DSRC transmissions enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications-collectively known as V2X. The data is broadcast up to 10 times a second to nearby vehicles, which can identify risks and provide warnings to avoid imminent crashes, especially at intersections.

The communication system will also enable the transmission of real-time information to drivers, such as potential hazards, slow or non-moving vehicles ahead, signals, signs, and road conditions that may be hard to see. This enables the vehicles to eschew cellular data charges and since the technology is based on industry standards, Toyota and Lexus models will be able to communicate with vehicles produced by other automakers. However, Toyota has now deployed its own technology in more than 100,000 vehicles in its native Japan since 2015.

Over the past 13 years, Toyota has collaborated with other automakers, infrastructure organizations and the US Department of Transportation to develop DSRC V2X communication technologies. Toyota will be hoping that standard is eventually the one it already operates and that other markets will then follow suit.

In 2016, the Obama administration has proposed requiring the technology and giving automakers at least four years to comply, said Reuters. The proposal is for all auto manufacturers to have a common language and a standardized system, the way we have Bluetooth.

DSRC will communicate using seven channels of the 5.9 GHz spectrum band that has been allocated for Intelligent Transportation Systems.

According to Reuters, communications systems between vehicles have been tested by United States carmakers for over a decade now.

In 2017, General Motors began offering vehicle-to-vehicle technologies on its Cadillac CTS model, but it is now the only commercially available vehicle with the system.

Previous year the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that the regulation could eventually cost between US$135 and US$300 per new vehicle, or up to US$5 billion annually.

"We need to make a technology choice when there's no regulatory requirement in place", said John Kenney, director of networking research at the Toyota InfoTechnology Center in California. "Today, 92 percent of all Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in the US have Toyota Safety Sense or Lexus Safety System + with AEB standard, and other automakers' deployment of this life-saving technology is accelerating, three years ahead of the 2022 industry target".

V2V technology, if in widespread use, might work in tandem with the sensors that allow automated vehicles to scan the roadways, adding a layer of redundancy.

However, the push for V2V communications has stalled under the Trump administration.
