Images of joyous athletes filing in behind their nations' flags have been a feature of closing ceremony broadcasts at Commonwealth and Olympic Games for decades.

Games Chairman Peter Beattie admitted the decision to not show the athletes "was a mistake".

"Did we stuff it up? Yes".

"Again, we got that wrong. I can't be more honest about it than that", he told Sunrise.

Seven presenter Johanna Griggs, a 1990 Commonwealth Games swimming bronze medallist, teed off at organisers, after viewers initially expressed frustration with the broadcaster when athletes were left out.

"Inclusion's been part of the organising committee's DNA", he says.

In front of a disappointing crowd at Carrara Stadium, Channel 7 host Johanna Griggs accused the event organisers of destroying a beloved tradition.

Fearnley says he's loved every minute of every Games he's competed in.

He also took to Twitter to explain the decisions of the event organisers.

"We were concerned about the welfare of athletes", he explained.

"They made the decision not to have athletes enter the stadium. We got that wrong".

"I got to carry that flag around, and thankfully my mum and my sister were in the stadium".

Numerous athletes including Usain Bolt also departed the stadium early before the ceremony ended.

England's sprinters have become so dominant that even Usain Bolt is considering coming out of retirement to stop them.

He said: "It's been a long week, very long but at the end of the week now I'm a gold medalist with the guys and I'm really happy I was a part of it. It shows that I have the class of a world class athlete to compose myself".
