Wide bandh brings Andhra Pradesh to a standstill

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who reviewed the situation with top police officials, directed them to ensure that peace prevailed in the state.

BJP leaders in Andhra Pradesh are facing the ire of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) over the BJP-led Centre's refusal to deny the state special category status. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses will operate only till the state border in the wake of the statewide bandh, which means daily commuters are most likely to face problems as autos and taxis won't be easily available.

Protests by MPs from Andhra Pradesh over the special status issue caused a near washout of the Budget Session of Parliament in March and April.

"Does the Chief Minister want us to protest in Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh for injustice done to the people of the State?" he asked. It was promised to the state by the Congress government during the state bifurcation, and by the Bharatiya Janata Party before the 2014 elections. Schools and banks as well as government offices will remain open and working despite the bandh.

Protests demanding special status for Andhra Pradesh gained speed after there was no mention of a special package for the state in the Union Budget.

The Jagan Reddy-led YSRC hit back, accusing the Chief Minister of adopting "double standards".

However, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which has been agitating for the special category status and implementation of the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act, has opposed it and have refused to take part in the protest. The TDP also joined the chorus. The Jana Sena Party president had also attacked Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for saying that he had hurt the sentiments of the Andhra people by saying that special status can not be given a special status category.
