14 Naxals killed in encounter with police in Gadchiroli district

In an encounter with the police, fourteen Naxals were killed in Etapalli's Boriya forest area in Gadchiroli district on Sunday.

In the retaliatory fire by the police that continued for over five hours till 11 am, at least 16 Maoists were gunned down, said the official. The two C-60 squads under commander Vasudev Madavi and Madhukar Netam, supported by CRPF, are learnt to have surrounded the rebels taking vantage positions that did not allow guerrillas to escape. "Luckily there have been no reports on injuries or casualties to any of the personnel from the commando team", said An-kush Shinde, divisional inspector general (Gadchiroli Range).

"The process of pulling out the dead bodies of the Naxals from the forested area is on, and the final number of the dead would be known once the search and combing operation is finished". The encounter took place in Rela-Kasnasur forest close to Tadgaon village, near Maharashtra-Chhattishgarh border, in Bhamragarh tehsil of Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, about 350 km from Nagpur.

Two divisional commanders of the Maoists - Sainath and Shrinu, alias Shrikant - are among those killed. The police had earlier announced cash rewards to persons giving information about their whereabouts.
