The 25-year-old Spaniard was handed a three-place grid penalty in qualifying and started fourth, but seized the lead on the opening lap before disappearing into the distance at Austin's Circuit of the Americas (COTA). As a result, the Spaniard has lost his sixth pole position at Circuit of The Americas and will start from fourth on the grid. Factory's Yamaha's Maverick Vinales finished in second, while Suzuki's Andrea Iannone was third in the race.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Spain's Marc Marquez stormed to his sixth consecutive victory at the MotoGP Grand Prix of the Americas on Sunday, launching the four-time champion back near the top of the season standings. The demotion did little to hinder Marquez as he and Iannone got off to good starts with the latter in the lead.

So impressive was Marquez's pace that it looked like he cruised to victory without even trying.

"I crashed and had to take my second bike for the second run", Marquez explained.

Dovizioso managed to find a way past Johann Zarco to come home in fifth place behind Rossi.

Andrea Dovizioso picked up the championship lead by one point after slowly picking his way up to fifth place as Britain's Cal Crutchlow failed to stay on his LCR Honda, going down at the last corner with 13 left to run.

Meanwhile, Vinales went past Iannone, but he managed to keep Rossi behind him despite pressure from the Yamaha rider.

Dani Pedrosa gritted his teeth to claim seventh despite his wrist injury, while Avintia's Tito Rabat held Ducati stablemate Jack Miller and Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro to secure eighth, while Jorge Lorenzo was cast a distant 11th. He qualified on pole but was demoted to 4th for blocking Maverick Vinales. The three-time world champion is racing only a week and a bit after surgery on a broken wrist sustained in the Argentina GP, and not only gained direct entry to Q2, but took a third row start in another superhuman effort.
