Libya violence: Twelve killed in Tripoli election headquarters attack

Officials told Reuters the attackers set fire to the building and killed at least 12 people.

He added that security officers had entered the building to respond to the attack in the Ghout al-Shaal district west of central Tripoli.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expressed the country's vehement condemnation of these acts of terror.

At least 12 people were killed and seven wounded, according to the health ministry.

The United Nations mission in Libya condemned the assault and extended condolences to victims' families.

In its statement, the Islamic State said the two suicide bombers detonated their explosive vests "after running out of ammunition".

The election commission said later in the day that its electoral database was safe after the attack, dispelling rumours that it had been specifically targeted and damaged.

The BBC reports Wednesday's attack was the deadliest the country has seen in years.

Libya has been the home to several militia groups as well as terrorist organizations such as ISIS since the fall of Dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Observers believe the group might carry out similar attacks to deter Libyans from holding elections.

In June 2014, following legislative elections, the General National Congress is replaced by a parliament dominated by anti-Islamists. US and other Western intelligence and security officials think the Islamic State is seeking to regroup in the south as well as gain ground in nearby countries such as Tunisia, Mali and Niger.

A 2015 UN-backed deal to set up the GNA in Tripoli failed to end the turmoil, as divisions continue with a rival administration in the east.

The commission recently registered almost 1 million new voters across the country.

In 2015, IS claimed an attack on Tripoli's luxury Corinthia Hotel that killed nine people including five foreigners.
