At one point, the sell-off wiped $50 billion off the company's market value.

The ousted Cambridge Analytica's CEO, Alexander Nix was listed as a director of Emerdata in February, until the firm chose to severe ties with him in March.

The move to demand answers from Facebook is the latest in a series of moves by the attorney general to hold companies accountable for putting Pennsylvanian's personal information at risk.

Cambridge Analytica's board has also applied to appoint insolvency practitioners Crowe Clark Whitehill to act as the independent administrator.

The company set up a new data firm called Emerdata past year, and there is speculation in the press that it could be used as a rebrand vehicle for both Cambridge Analytica and its parent company SCL Group. That probe, which involves as many as 30 other companies, goes on.

After the announcement, Britain's data regulator said it would continue civil and criminal investigations of the firm and will pursue "individuals and directors as appropriate" despite the shutdown.

The office also promised to "monitor closely any successor companies", meaning that the people behind Cambridge Analytica wouldn't be able to avoid scrutiny simply by incorporating under a new name. Other Emerdata directors include people associated with Cambridge Analytica.

"Cambridge Analytica and SCL group can not be allowed to delete their data history by closing", Collins told the Guardian.

SCL chairman Julian Wheatland, who was reportedly tapped to replace Nix as Cambridge Analytica's CEO before it announced its closure, is listed as Emerdata's CEO, Share Blue Media reported.

Absolutely not, say British authorities. The Indian government too has shot-off notices to both Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, confronting them with questions on data breach issue. But, will this strategy work for the company? It denies wrongdoing and yesterday it announced that the company and its parent, SCL Group, would be wound down due to loss of business as a result of the scandal. Former Cambridge Analytica employees have said that this work was done nearly entirely in London, by people employed by the British-based SCL Group, and that some of these foreigners went to work directly on US campaigns.

The U.K. and European Union parliaments also want Zuckerberg to answer their questions publicly, though he has so far declined. According to documents made public on social media in March, SCL India has regional offices in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Cuttack, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Patna and Pune.

Collins also said there was no precedent for a senior executive refusing a summons, adding that even Rupert and James Murdoch chose to appear during an investigation into phone hacking.

Facebook has informed the government that "only 335 people" in India were directly affected through the installation of an app and another 562,120 people were "potentially affected" as friends of those users.
