China recently installed anti-ship cruise missiles and surface-to-air missile systems on three outposts in the disputed South China Sea.

According to sources close to the U.S. intelligence, the recent missiles were installed by the Chinese military in the last 30 days in the disputed South China Sea. "The further militarization of outposts will only serve to raise tensions and create greater distrust among claimants".

The missile systems are now on Fiery Cross Reef, Subi Reef, and Mischief Reef, all part of the disputed Spratly Islands to which six nations - China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei - claim ownership.

A USA destroyer has sailed within 12 nautical miles of a Chinese-claimed island in the South China Sea, a highly-contested stretch of water where China's been reclaiming land and building islands, United States officials told CNN Friday.

One of the disputed reefs in the South China Sea Beijing is militarising.

"We've raised concerns directly with the Chinese about this and there will be near-term and long-term consequences".

Beijing previously announced in 2016 it had already deployed similar weapons to Woody Island in the Paracel Islands, on the northwestern edge of the South China Sea.

"We're well aware of China's militarisation of the South China Sea", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Thursday. "All we can do is manage it", Koh said.

China could use the bases to challenge the USA regional presence, and "would easily overwhelm the military forces of any other South China Sea-claimants".

In addition to land-reclamation efforts on reefs it controls and building civilian facilities there, China also has air bases, radar and communications systems, naval facilities and defensive weaponry in place including landing strips able to accommodate military planes.

The White House has warned China that it will not accept the continued military build-up in the hotly contested region.

Pentagon security chiefs has been grappling with lasers being pointed at aircraft for decades but the recent incidents highlight U.S. concerns about a Chinese military base just miles from a critical USA base in the east African state.

"China has to realise that they've benefited from the free navigation of the sea, and the US Navy has been the guarantor of that", Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said.
