In April 2018 US authorities took the unusual step of telling people to throw out any romaine lettuce they had and not eat it unless they were sure it was not from the Yuma Arizona area

USA residents now infected with the outbreak strain of E.coli O157:H7, in romaine lettuce, has increased with numbers now totaling 121 cases spread throughout 25 states with about 52 of those cases resulting in hospitalizations and one death in California. There are now 121 reported illnesses from 25 states, and in addition to the one death, there have been 52 hospitalizations and 14 kidney failures. CDC officials now suspect the infected lettuce came from the Yuma, Arizona region. Of the people sickened, 52 have been hospitalized, 14 of them with kidney failure.

The health officials said tainted romaine lettuce has been blamed for one death in California and added 20 more people as a victim of the worst E. coli outbreak in more than a decade.

Of the 25 affected states, California, Pennsylvania, and Idaho have been hit the worst. "I think the local stores that are getting their produce out of OR have a little bit more control of their source rather than a big national distribution store who may not be sure where it's coming from". People get sick within two to eight days of swallowing the germ, which causes diarrhea, stomach cramps and vomiting.

The CDC reminds the public not to serve, sell, or eat such lettuce.

OR has not been listed as one of the affected states and no resident has reported any illness relating to the E.coli outbreak.

"The agency is investigating dozens of other fields as potential sources of the chopped romaine lettuce and will share information as it becomes available", the FDA promises. Lettuce has a shelf life of only a couple of weeks at most, and any romaine lettuce on sale in stores today is likely not from Yuma and is not implicated in this outbreak. "We are working to identify multiple distribution channels that can explain the entirety of the nationwide outbreak and are tracing back from multiple groupings of ill people located in diverse geographic areas", the most recent statement reads.
