Boyd Rankin is in line to become one of the handful of cricketers to play Test cricket for two countries after his one cap for England in the disastrous Ashes tour in 2013-14.

Ireland have named a very experienced squad for their historic, first ever Test match, which takes place in Dublin next week.

Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom said Guerilla Cricket's ability to provide uninterrupted coverage of the Test match was key to them being awarded the broadcast rights.

While Ireland will start their journey against Pakistan, Afghanistan will play their own opening Test against India in Bengaluru from June 14.

Distinguished Irish cricket players who couldn't make the mark include all-rounder Simi Singh and pacer Barry McCarthy and batsman Jack Tector.

Ed Joyce is in the squad after being troubled by injury in Zimbabwe.

Ireland will again be led by experienced captain William Porterfield for what will be their first taste of the five-day format since being elevated to Test status.

Ireland's team will be confirmed by Porterfield at the toss next Friday morning, with the game being shown live on Sky Sports and a nightly highlights show available on RTÉ2.

Ireland squad: William Porterfield (captain), Andrew Balbirnie, Ed Joyce, Tyrone Kane, Andy McBrine, Tim Murtagh, Kevin O'Brien, Niall O'Brien (wkt), Boyd Rankin, Nathan Smith, Paul Stirling, James Shannon, Stuart Thompson, Gary Wilson.
