N. Korea turns clock forward 30 minutes

Trump announced Friday that a time and place for his meeting with Kim has been set and will be announced shortly. They committed themselves to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and pledged to bring a formal end to the Korean War, 65 years after hostilities ceased.

He told South Korean President Moon Jae-in that his heart ached when he saw 2 clocks on a wall at the meeting venue showing the time differences between Pyongyang and Seoul. "We now have a date and we have a location".

The directive has rattled officials at the Pentagon and other agencies, who worry that any reduction could weaken the American alliance with South Korea and raise fears in neighbouring Japan at the very moment that the USA is embarking on a risky nuclear negotiation with the North.

The New York Times on Thursday cited several people familiar with the deliberations as saying the president was seeking options ahead of his planned summit with the North Korean leader.

As for a reduction in the number of troops stationed in South Korea, Trump said that was not under negotiation - for now.

"North Korea watches us as much as we follow North Korea. We'll be announcing it soon", Trump told reporters on May 4 outside the White House before he departed for a trip to Dallas.

Trump also said that he was not considering reducing the United States military's presence in South Korea as part of the negotiations.

"I think a lot of good things are going to be happening over the next short period of time", he said.

During his presidential campaign, Trump complained that South Korea does not do enough to financially support the American military commitment.

National Security Adviser John Bolton also denied the report on Friday.

The time between South and North Korea had differed starting from 2015. But the official acknowledged that Trump has publicly expressed frustrations at the cost and size of the USA presence there, and said the issue would have to be addressed eventually.

Trump, who has hinted at imminent news about three Americans detained in North Korea, once more sounded an upbeat note regarding their fate.

The US has been demanding the North free Kim Hak-song, Kim Sang-duk and Kim Dong-chul and reports say the two sides were close to reaching a deal on their release.
