President Donald Trump hired a veteran attorney who represented Bill Clinton during his impeachment process as the White House shifted to a more aggressive approach to a special counsel investigation that has reached a critical stage.

Giuliani also said this week that Trump fired Comey because he wouldn't say Trump wasn't a target of the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation. Mr. Cobb feared that the special counsel was on the verge of issuing subpoenas demanding documents and testimony from White House aides, a move that could have locked the administration in a contentious court fight it was certain to lose. "I have to find that we're going to be treated fairly", he said, referring to a potential sit-down with Mueller. The president's legal team has not committed to an interview with Mueller, who has dozens of questions on a broad array of topics he'd like to ask Trump.

The news outlet further noted that as a White House employee, Flood will not be representing Trump personally, meaning his conversations with the president will not be covered by attorney-client privilege and that he could be questioned like McGhan.

Giuliani on Thursday had connected the payment to Stormy Daniels by the president's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, to keep quiet about a 2006 sexual encounter she said she had with Trump to the election, remarks that raised the possibility that the transaction violated federal election law.

The two sides have been negotiating the terms of a possible interview for months, including topics Mueller might pursue as part of a almost year-old inquiry into possible collusion between Moscow and Trump's presidential campaign.

The New York Times reported in January that McGahn threatened to resign a year ago when Trump ordered Mueller to be fired.

"There is not and will not be any consideration of terminating the special counsel, Bob Mueller", Mr. Cobb said in an interview in October.

Mueller is helming a wide-ranging probe into unproven allegations that the president's campaign colluded with Russians to impact the result of the 2016 election. Trump continues to adamantly deny that any obstruction has taken place and has suggested that questions about it would amount to "a setup" and "trap".

"The problem with sitting is this: You have a group of investigators".

"At some point, I will have no choice but to use the powers granted to the Presidency and get involved!" said Trump in a Wednesday morning Twitter post. Comey said in the interview.

The standoff between Dowd and Mueller led to weeks of turmoil, according to the Post, as Trump's legal team determined how to respond to Mueller's request for an interview with Trump.

But some lawmakers who sit on those committees remain unsatisfied, particularly members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.
