"We reaffirm our support for United Nations efforts, including the mission now being carried out in Bangladesh and Burma by the Security Council, as well as the work of the humanitarian organisations on the ground". "One is an ICC [International Criminal Court] referral".

A judge in Myanmar declared on Wednesday that a witness who said two Reuters reporters accused of possessing state secrets were framed by police was credible, dealing a blow to the prosecution in what has become a landmark press freedom case. This was the council's first visit to Southeast Asia since ambassadors visited East Timor in 2012.

They also met with Myanmar's leader, leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whom British U.N. Ambassador Karen Pierce described as "very forthcoming" on the topic of the rapes, insisting such crimes were "not tolerated".

But Suu Kyi's civilian government has little control over the Myanmar military.

She did not comment on Min Aung Hlaing's response.

"No sexual violence happened in the history of Myanmar Tatmadaw", he added, telling United Nations envoys they should study documentary evidence supplied to them by the military in order to learn the truth.

The Rohingya told the delegation that they do not want to accept national verification cards (NVCs) issued by the Myanmar government. That investigation led to a United States declaration of genocide and the imposition of economic sanctions against the Sudanese government, the news agency said.

"The ministers will discuss in detail the repatriation of the refugees agreed by the two countries and resettlement plans for the returnees", Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Myint Thu told The Associated Press. He said he did not believe the Trump administration would pay serious attention to the findings.

India favoured a long-term strategy for socio-economic development of the Rakhine State, the spokesperson said, adding that New Delhi had also welcomed the agreement between Myanmar and Bangladesh on the rehabilitation of displaced people. "So the investigation can not have that much impact".

The 15-member delegation co-led by Security Council President Gustavo Meza-Cuadra was joined by Rakhine state and central government officials and ministers heading to Maungdaw in northern Rakhine where the Myanmar government has built reception camps for the Rohingya refugees now living in camps and other temporary shelters in Bangladesh.

The U.N. refugee agency and Bangladesh recently finalized a memorandum of understanding that said the repatriation process must be "safe, voluntary and dignified.in line with global standards".

"We want to see that happening soon".

Top U.N. envoys have warned Tuesday that the Myanmar government needed to better prepare for the return from Bangladesh of Rohingya Muslims who have fled due to human rights abuses perpetrated by security forces.

As the largest humanitarian assistance donor in the world, the United States remains committed to supporting Bangladesh alongside their worldwide partners, he said.
