He plans to trim his squad to 26 players on 14 May, five days before they embark on a training camp in Turkey.

The 38-year-old Cahill is Australia's all-time leading goalscorer but has struggled for form and match time in recent months.

"Maybe a world championship is too early for him, but I will not hesitate to nominate him if I think that he can mean something for us, and can make a difference maybe in the last 10 or 15 minutes", van Marwijk said. If he is selected for Australia and plays he will not be able to return to play for Croatia again.

The Dutchman named a 32-man squad, which will need to be cut to 23 by June 3, with highly-rated teenage striker Daniel Arzani included for the first time.

Midfielders - Josh Brillante (Sydney FC), Mile Jedinak (Aston Villa, England), Jackson Irvine (Hull City, England), Robbie Kruse (Bochum, Germany), Massimo Luongo (Queens Park Rangers, England), Mark Milligan (Al Ahli, Saudi Arabia), Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield Town, England), Tom Rogic (Celtic, Scotland), James Troisi (Melbourne Victory).

Another surprise inclusion was uncapped Croatian-born defender Fran Karacic, who may fill the right-back position for Australia.

"He is not 19 like (Daniel) Arzani - he's twice as old - but is also a player who can make a difference".

"We don't have a lot of players who play that position. when somebody on the technical staff gives me the information about a player playing in Croatia who also has an Australian passport, then it can be an interesting player", he told a news conference.

The Dutch coach, who will lead the Socceroos during the World Cup campagin before Graham Arnold takes over the reins, said Arzani's ability to turn the course of a game in the blink of an eye was behind his decision to pick the 19-year-old.

"He plays only right-back and we don't have a lot of players in that position ... it's a position we discuss a lot."

Striker Jamie Maclaren was also recalled to the squad after some strong performances for Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership.

Karacic's father is Australian but he hasn't played in Australia. Maclaren hasn't played for Australia since a qualifier against Thailand in November.

Karacic's first chance to impress wearing green and gold - if he makes the culled squad - will be when the Socceroos face the Czech Republic in a friendly on June 2.
