But it has been suggested Manchester United are unlikely to want to sell Martial unless the striker pushes for a transfer in the summer.

The France global started the campaign in fine fettle, appearing to have rediscovered the sparkle he boasted under Louis van Gaal.

The malleable attacker arrived at Old Trafford from AS Monaco in 2015 as that year's Golden Boy victor and with so much promise ahead of him, but there are those who see his 26 starts this season as too low a number.

However, Alexis Sanchez's arrival from Arsenal in January has seen his Manchester United form wane.

While a move for Martial was blocked on that occasion, a summer exit this time around looks far more likely.

The report says the United boss saw an opportunity to send a message to the board and took it.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is understood to be a fan of Martial - who became the world's most expensive teenager when he joined the club in 2015 - but Mourinho has reportedly decided that the France global has no future at Old Trafford.

Martial is a player who will demand a heavy fee from whoever wants him but United could replace him with a Chelsea man.

This may come as disappointing news to Tottenham Hotspur, who are also reportedly interested in signing Martial.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are after the signature of Adama Traore after his imperial season with Middlesbrough.
