President Trump spoke about gun laws in France during a free-wheeling address to the National Rifle Association rally, which was packed with suporters, in Texas on Friday in which he also talked about knife crime in London, comparing a hospital in the city to a war zone-like one.

Macron - fresh from an upbeat state visit to Washington - has been trying to forge a strong relationship with the United States while tackling Trump over issues including climate change and the Iran nuclear pact.

The French foreign Ministry announced on this occasion a special statement which said: "France strongly disagree with the comments of the President of trump on Paris attacks that took place on 13 November 2015, and it requires respect for the memory of the victims of these events".

"France is proud to be a country where acquiring and carrying firearms is strictly regulated".

The Minister of Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire denounced Trump's comments, urging Trump to "retract his words and express regret".

"His comments are shocking and not worthy of the president of the world's greatest superpower", Mr Le Maire told BFM TV yesterday.

The Daily Mail reports that French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian responded by expressing "firm disapproval" of Trump's suggestion that allowing people to be armed for self-defense would have made them safer. "They captured them and killed one after the other - boom, boom", Come here, let's boom boom!" Come over here. Boom, come over here. "Come over here!" and using his hand to imitate a gun being fired.

Mr Francois Hollande, who was French president at the time, said on Twitter that Mr Trump's remarks were "shameful" and "obscene".

Trump's provocative comments are expected to increase concerns about his planned first presidential visit to Britain on July 13.

Relations with Prime Minister Theresa May cooled past year after she criticised him for retweeting anti-Islam videos by a British far-right group.

The US president also told the crowd in Dallas that a "once very prestigious hospital" in London was like a "war zone" because of knife crime. They have knives and instead there's blood all over the floors of this hospital.

Knife-related crimes rose by 23 percent in London last year and a spate of stabbings and shootings have left more than 50 people dead this year. London topped even NY this year in terms of violent crime statistics.

"To suggest guns are part of the solution is ridiculous", said surgeon Karim Brohi of the Royal London Hospital in a statement.

"Gunshot wounds are at least twice as lethal as knife injuries and more hard to fix".

Britain's government effectively banned handgun ownership in England, Scotland and Wales after a school shooting in 1996.
