Blankenship bid divides West Virginia, as GOP primary rivals praise Trump intervention

Everybody has an opinion about Don Blankenship in West Virginia - and they have for years. Trump won almost 70 percent of the vote in West Virginia in 2016, making Democratic Senator Joe Manchin one of the most vulnerable Democrats on the ballot this fall.

"Swamp captain Mitch McConnell has created millions of jobs for China people", Blankenship said in one of his campaign ads."While doing so, Mitch has gotten rich". Primary voters nominated a seriously flawed candidate for the special election for the Senate in Alabama in 2017, and the party ended up losing a general election that, on paper, it should have won.

Last week, the president's son, Donald Trump Jr., also tweet's a plea for "the people of West Virginia to make a wise decision and reject Blankenship". Jeff Flake, a frequent Trump critic and someone mentioned as a possible 3rd party candidate for president in 2020, hit Trump for that mentality in a tweet Monday.

The Tweeter-in-Chief informed the West Virginia populace Monday morning that they should not vote Don Blankenship for Senate.

Taking a page from Trump's 2016 playbook, Blankenship has talked about conspiracy theories, tried to revamp his past, has given his political opponents nicknames like "Little Joe" and went full throttle against Washington, D.C. Strategists point to the recent Fox News debate, where they say he came across as likable and even amusing after being painted as villain in political ads.

"We have a three-alarm fire in West Virginia", Republican strategist Ford O'Connell told Newsweek.

U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart in Charleston says his office has no information regarding Morrisey's claim but adds it "would not be a violation" of Blankenship's supervised release. "Let's put America first, find the very best person in West Virginia and not have a situation where we can't even compete in November". On a West Virginia radio show, he suggested that McConnell faces a conflict of interest because he's married to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who was born in Taiwan to Chinese parents.

That hasn't stopped Blankenship from using Trump to help his case.

Much to the chagrin of McConnell and Trump, Blankenship's extreme behavior has appealed to far-right primary voters but will likely serve as a disadvantage when the time comes to move toward the middle in the general election. Not on what Blankenship has said or what he believes.

Moore later lost to Democrat Doug Jones, after facing sexual misconduct allegations from almost 10 women, including accusations of child molestation. Should the Mr. Blankenship however win despite the intervention it would be exceptionally uncomfortable to Mr. Trump. Sure, Trump endorsed Moore's primary opponent - appointed Sen. "As some have said, I am Trumpier than Trump and this morning proves it".

Republicans a part of the race have been pressuring the White House to talk out, however, administration officials were not fully specific what Mr. Trump would perform before they watched that the conversation.
