In Quetta (Western Pakistan) there was a gas explosion in the mine, at least 23 miners were killed.

Seven other labourers perished in another incident caused by a mudslide in a mine in the Surrange area, some 60 kilometres east of Quetta. Their bodies were later recovered after hours-long rescue operation.

Attaullah Khan, Pakistan's director of disaster management, on May 5 said a blast caused by a buildup of methane gas in the Marwar coalfields in Balochistan Province led to the collapse of a mine, trapping many workers. There were 30 workers inside the mine at the time of the accident.

Quetta Commissioner Javed Anwar Shahwani confirmed that 16 miners were killed in the Marwar mines.

At least 23 labourers were killed and several others suffered injuries when two coal mines caved in near Quetta on Saturday.

Accidents are frequent in the province's mines, where safety measures are basic and numerous workforce come from other parts of Pakistan.

It urged the government to ratify the Safety and Health in Mines Convention of the International Labour Organisation. All the injured miners were rescued and taken to the hospital.

The resolution said those found guilty of negligence be awarded punishments, mines where such fatal incidents took place be sealed and laws pertaining to safety of miners be implemented.

A total of 43 workers died in 2011 when gas explosions triggered a collapse in another Balochistan colliery, also owned by the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation.
