The Israeli attack against Syria coincided with the announcement of the President of the United States Donald trump on withdrawal from the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) however said that at least nine pro-government fighters were killed during the Israeli missile strikes.

Reuters said that the Israeli military "has instructed local authorities in the Israeli-held Golan Heights to "unlock and ready (bomb) shelter" after identifying what the military described on Tuesday as 'irregular activity of Iranian forces in Syria.'" It also said that the Israeli forces are on high alert.

Following the attack, Lebanese media reported that Israeli jets were flying sorties over the country's southern coast.

A spokesman for the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told "SANA the Syrian Arab News Agency" that the country's air defense systems had intercepted two missiles aimed at the base. Syrian TV reported earlier large explosions in the area. "Consider well whether to visit the Golan Heights until tensions in the region decrease". An IDF spokesperson would not elaborate on which units they came from, but media reports indicated they served in air defense, intelligence and Home Front Command units. Its decision to do so on Tuesday night was likely an effort to both reassure residents of northern Israel and warn Iran that the IDF was prepared to counter a missile attack.

"Western military sources said the military compound that was hit is located about 10 miles south of the Syrian capital city of Damascus", it reported.

Israel has not yet commented on the report. They include an attack last month on Syria's T4 air base in Homs province that killed seven Iranian military personnel, for which Tehran has vowed to retaliate. "Any aggression against Israel will be met with a severe response". Another Syrian military source said the attack targeted a Syrian army base without incurring casualties.
