Thunderstorms squall and heavy rains likely in 13 states 2 UTs on Monday IMD

Dust storms hit Chandigarh and parts of Punjab and Haryana this evening with many residents preferring to stay indoors in view of the IMD's forecast of thunderstorm and squall tomorrow in several parts of north India. However, the national capital might have spell of strong winds up to 70 Kmph, it said.

The Meteorological Department has predicted winds of 50 to 70 kmph per hour in these areas as well as West Bengal and Sikkim. Delhi Traffic and Delhi Metro, too, announced precautionary measures. All schools in Ghaziabad district will also remain shut today.

The government and Department of Education also issued circulars on the MeT warnings of dos and don'ts. The Delhi Police has already advised the commuters to take heed of the storm, and check before traveling in the conditions, because there are chances that roads could get clogged.

Water and power utilities to also keep restoration teams ready.

Seeing the weather warning, the Delhi Metro is also treading with extreme caution in running of trains.

Thunderstorm, accompanied by gusty winds, are very likely at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Bihar, West Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. There was an IMD alert, issued on Monday, of "a cyclonic circulation over Haryana", saying it will bring light to moderate rainfall in north India. Referring to the warning, the Delhi government said necessary precautions were being taken, with search and rescue teams asked to be on standby while a disaster helpline - 1077 - had been activated. "If speeds are reported more than 90kmph, trains will be put on hold at platforms and no train will enter a platform with a speed of more than 15kmph".

Keep away from overhead electric wires, tinned roofs, trees etc. while stopping or parking vehicles.

This decision came hours after Indian Meteorological Department issued a mild thunderstorm and dust storm warning for the next 48 hours in New Delhi and its neighbouring states.
