Gentry, Jr., of the Highlands County Sheriff's Office in Florida, died Monday after being shot on Sunday while responding to a dispute involving a cat.

Deputy Gentry went to 234 Baltimore Way, where 69-year-old Joseph Edward Ables lives, while a training officer remained with the neighbor who initially called law enforcement.

Gentry was responding to a report that a local resident's cat had been shot with a pellet gun. The 40-year-old deputy was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital.

Ables was held without bond on charges that include attempted first-degree murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Deputies later arrested and charged Joseph Edward Ables, 69, for shooting Deputy Gentry. Brown. They first spoke to the pet owner, and Gentry walked over to Ables' home at 234 Baltimore Way.

Further tributes have been paid to Gentry, who became the third Highlands County Sheriff's Office deputy to be killed in the line of duty in the department's 97-year history.

Gentry nor the practice officer exchanged gunfire Blackman stated. Four deputies carried out a memorial wreath - a ring of green and yellow flowers with Gentry's name displayed over a blue line through the center - and placed it in front of Gentry's police cruiser, parked on the front lawn with its blue lights flashing.

Law enforcement agencies from around Southwest Florida offered their support for the critically injured deputy on social media.

"William is an experienced law enforcement officer and serves as one of our field training deputies", Blackman said in the Facebook post.

"We stand with Deputy Gentry, his family, his friends, and with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office during this tragic time", the Florida Sherriff's Association added. "We will release details about the services as soon as we have them".
