Detainee Uprising Outside Jakarta Is Claimed by Islamic State

Authorities were unsure how many people remained inside the prison complex.

Authorities said the prisoners had armed themselves with about 30 weapons, including long-range rifles, taken from officers and a storage area in the jail for weapons confiscated during police operations.

The riot has dealt a blow to the Brimob, the National Police's Counterterrorism Squad Densus 88, and the National Police, as the tragic incident took place at the command station of the police's elite force. The country is embroiled in an ongoing armed struggle with Islamic State.

Police have resolved a hostage crisis at a high-security jail on the outskirts of the capital, Jakarta, after almost all the Islamist prisoners involved had surrendered.

Most of the prisoners surrendered before dawn Thursday following an ultimatum from security personnel, said Coordinating Minister for Political, Law and Security Wiranto, who goes by one name. Five police officers and one inmate were killed while another police officer was still a hostage on Wednesday.

"If they surrender, it will be a non-violent process".

"We are securing the situation, containing inmates so this doesn't spread".

But a link to Islamist terrorists was made after a publication of the Islamic State group's Amaq News Agency.

Mr Iqbal denied IS was behind the attack or that it had been planned.

The riot began on Tuesday night when the guards refused to give an inmate food brought by his family which led the prisoner to urge other inmates to revolt, according to officials.

A riot has injured prisoners and some officers at a police detention center south of Indonesia's capital. He is on trial for terrorism and is held at the same prison.

The counter-terrorism squad has won global praise for breaking up militant cells in the world's largest Muslim-majority country in the years since the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Last year, an attack by two suicide bombers, using pressure cookers packed with explosives, killed three police officers and wounded 12 at a Jakarta bus terminal.
