Mahathir Mohamad, former Malaysian prime minister and opposition candidate for Pakatan Harapan (Alliance of Hope) reacts during a news conference after general election.

The results from the Election Commission showed the opposition grouping, Pakatan Harapan, plus a party in the Borneo state of Sabah they are allied with, winning 115 seats - giving them a simple parliamentary majority.

The National Front lost its two-thirds majority in parliament in 2008 polls and lost the popular vote in 2013, though it still won 60 per cent of seats that year.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's governing National Front coalition, or BN, has ruled Malaysia without interruption since independence from the British in 1957.

Mahathir's alliance, which counts on urban votes and support from the minority ethnic Chinese and Indian communities, had hoped the veteran Malay leader would win over voters usually loyal to BN. And then it's uncertain how long he'll stay in power before the return of Anwar, his a one-time deputy to Mahathir who was sacked after a dispute over economic policies in 1998.

Dr Mahathir was credited with modernising Malaysia during his time as leader but was also known for his heavy-handed approach, which saw opponents imprisoned and courts subjugated. However, he joined hands with his one-time protege, the jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim, and together their alliance exploited public disenchantment over the cost of living and a multi-billion-dollar scandal that has dogged Najib since 2015.

Under Najib, the ruling coalition's prestige has been eroded by the 1MDB corruption scandal and an unpopular sales tax that hit poor rural Malays particularly hard.

Mahathir Mohamad, center, holds an endorsement letter as he speaks next to President of Justice Party Wan Azizah, left, and General Secretary of Democratic Action Party Lim Guan Eng, right, during a press conference at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Thursday, May 10, 2018. Najib urged the country to remain calm while the king makes "the best choice".

Mahathir, when asked if he had any advice for Najib, warned the man he groomed for office not to defy the will of the people.

Mahathir sacked Anwar as his deputy prime minister in 1998. He was undoubtedly, country's most eminent leaders.

Asifa Hanifah joined thousands of opposition supporters in central Kuala Lumpur who waved flags, cheered and honked vehicle horns.

Mahathir is 92 and leads an alliance of opposition parties.

"It is not just a comeback", she said.

Anwar is due to be released from prison in June.

The paper's website also contained some diplomatic words from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong who said Singapore was looking forward to developing a "constructive relationship" with the next Malaysian leadership.

"Looking back now, I realize why, as Prime Minister of Malaysia I was described as a dictator", Mahathir wrote.

"Barisan is committed to respect the principles of Parliament".

"The palace has contacted us, because they heard that we have achieved a majority".
