Israel hits Iranian posts in Syria: What we know

There were no Israeli casualties.

Earlier Thursday, Israel said Iran's Al Quds force fired 20 rockets at Israeli front-line military positions in the Golan Heights.

The Israeli attack started when the Israelis on Wednesday evening targeted military positions in Qunaitera, which pushed the Syrian side to shell Israeli military positions in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Conricus said Israel was not looking to escalate the situation but that troops will continue to be on "very high alert".

The targets included rocket launchers, intelligence posts, military command posts, and weapons depots.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz quoted an unidentified security official as saying Israel's attacks inside Syria were the most extensive since the two nations signed a disengagement agreement after the October war of 1973.

"Air defences confronted tens of Israeli rockets and some of them reached their target and destroyed one of the radar sites", Syrian state news agency SANA reported, citing a military source.

Map locating reported air strikes, May 10.

According to Israeli army spokesman Ronen Manelis, last night's strikes "significantly damaged Quds Force and [Iranian] Revolutionary Guard targets throughout Syria". "We struck the vehicle that launched the rockets against Israel", the IDF spokesman said. An IDF spokesperson called it one of the biggest Israeli Air Force operations of recent years.

A broadcaster on Iranian state television described the Israeli attack as "unprecedented" since the 1967 Six-Day War.

He also confirmed that no rocket landed in the Israeli territory.

Bahrain is a close ally of Saudi Arabia and the two countries, whose foreign policies are often in lockstep, view Iran as the chief threat to the region.

Iran has established a significant presence in Syria after moving to support Syrian President Bashar Al Assad and maintain his power that had always been threatened by moderate rebels and extremist factions.

Thursday's flare-up came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned from a visit to Moscow, where he discussed Syria concerns with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Independent reported that nine people are thought to have been killed by the Israeli airstrikes, including Hezbollah militia fighters and members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

Five Syrian air-defence systems were also destroyed after coming under heavy fire, they said, adding none of the Israeli warplanes were hit.

Analysts say President Donbald Trump's scrapping of the Iran deal means it has less to lose by retaliating, and the move has added weight to hard-liners in the Islamic Republic who want to show strength.

The United States slammed the Iranian missile strike Thursday, adding the USA "strongly supports" Israel's efforts to defend itself.

Whether or not there will be a full-blown direct war between Iran and Israel remains to be seen.

Netanyahu also informed Russian Federation about the attack before it happened.
