Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has reiterated his need to sign a striker this summer.

Rafael Benitez felt his side were hard done by, drawing parallels with his view of Newcastle's 2-0 home defeat to Spurs in August 2017, but picked out midfielder Jonjo Shelvey as the visitors' stand-out player.

Spurs, who went above Liverpool into third place, will guarantee finishing behind the Manchester clubs if they beat Leicester at home in their final game on Sunday.

Dwight Gayle also put a header over the bar.

"We had 14 attempts against Tottenham at home and two penalties not given".

"We did really well".

Especially in the first half, Newcastle were by far the better team.

"The fans are awesome, and the relationship between fans and players this year is one of the factors why we've been safe".

Rose came off the bench late in the game and nearly bagged a second goal for Spurs as fellow substitute Lamela played him in on goal, but the left-back could not beat Dubravka.

"In the games that we couldn't win, we were very close".

"It was a hard game for us".

"Against Tottenham, from the first minute until the last, you could see from the touchline they were doing what they had to do - and we deserve credit for that".

Pochettino's side missed half-chances and misplaced passes throughout and their only real moment of quality was Kane's goal.

"Next season, it will be fantastic for Tottenham to be playing in a new stadium and in the Champions League".

The Argentinian took to Twitter and wrote: "I said it before and I say it now more loudly than ever: Very very proud of Mauricio Pochettino and the boys".

"I hope fitness is not a big issue, and he can be ready and fit to play at the World Cup. It's a massive congratulations and a massive thank you to the staff too". It's a massive effort.

"Now, [after] almost 38 games playing away from home in the Premier League, I think it's good to say thank you to all the staff".

Spurs will have played "38 away games" by the end of the campaign, the Argentine told reporters, after a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at their temporary Wembley Stadium home which has been used while a new White Hart Lane ground is built.
