AT&T confirms it paid Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's company

AT&T forced out the head of its Washington office Friday, while its CEO issued a statement acknowledging that hiring Cohen - who was long known as Trump's "fixer" in NY - was "a big mistake".

"Strategy? They have a strategy?"

Much of the country is reeling over the audacity of President TrumpDonald John TrumpPruitt dined with Cardinal accused of sexual abuse: report Kelly: No consideration on leaving White House despite "times of great frustration" Kelly: Trump "embarrassed" by Russian Federation probe MORE's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen.

He added that it his understanding that cable TV bookers had the "plug pulled" on pre-booked appearances by Trump advisors when they heard the attorney might appear for a counterpoint.

Cecilia Kang is a New York Times writer. Now, it appears that Trump's inner circle not only tried to use the pending merger as a tool for extracting more favorable coverage from CNN - but also, at least in Cohen's case, as one for extracting hundreds of thousands of dollars from AT&T. "If it is accurate that Cohen touted his sway over Trump and offered to influence the Trump administration on matters that affect the business interests of Novartis, and these companies, in turn, made payments to Cohen for such services, that crosses the line into lobbying", Craig Holman, government affairs lobbyist for the group Public Citizen, told the Beast.

Cohen, the subject of a criminal investigation by prosecutors in NY, has acknowledged paying $130,000 to the adult film star actress Stormy Daniels before the election to buy her silence about an alleged relationship with Trump in 2006.

Novartis said this week that it had provided information about its dealings with Cohen to the special counsel. South Korea's KAI said on Wednesday it paid $150,000 to Cohen's firm.

It was through Essentials Consulting that AT&T retained Cohen.

Though the company initially admitted to paying Cohen $200,000, Stephenson's memo says they gave Cohen $50,000 per month, or $600,000 total, to "help us understand how the president and his administration might approach a wide range of policy issues important to the company, including regulatory reform at the FCC, tax reform, and antitrust enforcement, specifically our Time Warner deal".

Three different explanations were still not enough for Novartis, so last night they issued a fourth explanation saying the whole episode was a "mistake" but that they couldn't get out of their contract with Cohen because it didn't have an escape clause.

Essential Consulting also received payments from other companies, including one linked to a Russian oligarch.

The Treasury Department's inspector general's office has said it's investigating whether anyone in officialdom was involved with giving non-public bank records to Avenatti. The Washington Post first reported the investigation.

While Novartis said it got little from Cohen, the arrangement dragged Novartis into Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into suspected Russian meddling in the USA presidential election.

Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to once again decry news coverage about him. Friends called me, It was a insane day, ' he said. It is not a solicitation to make any exchange in commodities, securities or other financial instruments.
