The United States aspires to have North Korea as a "close partner" and not an enemy, the U.S. secretary of state has said.

Pompeo said US aim was clear - "to ensure that North Korean doesn't possess the capacity to threaten, not only the United States but the world, with nuclear weapons".

Kang says there must be "airtight" coordination between South Korea and the US ahead of President Donald Trump's upcoming meeting with Kim.

USA secretary of state Mike Pompeo has offered economic help to impoverished North Korea if it gives up its nuclear weapons, as the two countries prepare for an historic summit between Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

This was stated by U.S. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo at a joint press conference with foreign Minister of South Korea, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to NewsOne. The location of the upcoming meeting was revealed hours after three American prisoners were released by North Korea and came back to the United States. "North Korea summit, so we're not talking about sanctions relief at this point", she said.

North Korea has long seen its nuclear program as key to its survival, and it's not certain how honest Kim Jong-un is about giving up his nuclear arsenal.

The pair, he said, talked "about how it is he wishes to proceed and if he's prepared, in exchange for the assurances that we're ready to provide him, if he is prepared to fully denuclearize".

But he added: "I'm confident that we have a shared understanding of the outcome that the leaders want, certainly President Trump and chairman Kim, but I think President Moon as well".

The Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification was signed by South and North Korean leaders, which laid out a peaceful path forward. "I hope Mr. Trump will make a breakthrough to achieve our goals".

So far, the North Korean regime has made vague pledges to "denuclearize" but has not spelled out what that means, when it would happen or how it would be implemented.

"We are very clear that sanctions remain in place until and unless we see visible, meaningful action taken by North Korea on the denuclearisation track", Ms Kang said.

Amid concerns that North Korea will demand the US withdraw its troops from neighboring South Korea, Kang emphasized that the US military presence there must be "a matter for the US-ROK alliance first and foremost", using an acronym for South Korea's official name, the Republic of Korea.
