Authorities said Friday a mother and her four children are among seven people killed in Australia's deadliest mass shooting in over 20 years.

Three firearms have been found at the Osmington farm where seven members of the same family were found dead from gunshot wounds. Also, police do not conduct searches of the suspects, because there is a suspicion that the killer was one of those killed was a suicide.

Police are treating it as a murder-suicide and said they are not looking for any suspects. When the police arrived at the residence, they discovered the bodies of three adults and four children. "This devastating tragedy will no doubt have a lasting impact on the families concerned, the whole community and in particular, the local communities in our south-west".

WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson revealed the firearms were licensed to Mr Miles.

The others are believed to be their 35-year-old daughter Katrina Miles and her four children - daughter Taye, 13, and sons Rylan, 12, Arye, 10, and Kadyn Cockman, eight.

"Although the details of this tragedy are yet to come to light, Australia has a tragic history of higher rate of gun deaths in rural areas", she added.

"Her wealth of knowledge and willingness to share her passion for home education was something that we are all incredibly grateful for", she said.

Facebook posts by Katrina and Cynda Miles, quoted by local media, referred to the children as all being autistic and homeschooled. In response, many American politicians, including President Barack Obama, have pointed to Australia as a guide to how stricter gun laws could result in fewer mass shootings.

Dawson refused to be drawn on who the person was that alerted police, their relationship to the victims or whether they heard gunshots.

There's an eerie feeling about the tourist town of Margaret River.

Dozens of Homicide Squad Detectives and forensic investigators remain at the rural property on Osmington Road.

"I can only describe it as a horrific situation", Dawson said.

He said police thought the call was made from the property, but said it was a "complex criminal investigation".

"Many people who know the family are deeply feeling the loss".

The woman said the property contained two houses, one relatively new, for the occupants to live in.

According to neighbors and public records, Cynda Miles worked for a local community group.

Counselling services are available from 1pm Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the Margaret River Community Resource Centre.
