Vasiliy Lomachenko, of Ukraine, celebrates after his victory against Jorge Linares, of Venezuela, during their WBA lightweight championship boxing bout Saturday, May 12, 2018, in NY.

Victory would have seen Lomachenko break Saensak Muangsurin's record for the fewest fights to win a world title but he was famously "old-manned" by his 33-year-old opponent, losing a split-decision during a gruelling affair in San Antonio, Texas, US.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist from the Ukraine dominated most of the fight with speed that produced lightning combinations and a now-you-see-him, now-you-don't defense.

In the sixth round, the Venezuelan went straight right.

Lomachenko quickly regained control. The day before the fight Lomachenko and Linares weigh the same - 61,05 kg.

By round eight the physical damage on Linare' face had erupted as a cut over the left eye that became Lomachenko's target. Linares brings more experienced, a height and reach advantage and will also pack a more powerful punch than the smaller challenger. Referee Ricky Gonzalez then waved it over. Judges had it 86-84 Lomachenko, 86-84 Linares and 85-85, the same as Yahoo Sports.

His second attempt proved more fruitful, as he outpointed Gary Russell Jr to claim the WBO belt left vacant after Salido missed weight during his win over Loma.

"For me, it's a big challenge because, before this fight, I fought against guys who were the same size or a little bit smaller than me", said Lomachenko, 30.

It's nearly time for two of the best current Pound-for-Pound fighters to meet in the middle of the squared circle and with that, I wanted to do a bit of a comparison based on my views of their attributes so that we can look at how close this contest really is on paper!

Lomachenko said: "I don't think about stopping Linares and forcing him to quit". I'm going to shut him up.

The opening round was a feeling out process, though fighters were throwing a lot.

What won Lomachenko (11-1, 9 knockouts) the WBA lightweight title was a flawless left body shot that sent Linares (44-4, 27 KOs) to the mat. Lomachenko continued to stay on the attack in the fourth round. Linares weighed in at 134½ pounds, too, but the former champion was believed to be at least 10 pounds heavier than Lomachenko by the time their bout began.

It seemed that Linares had given Lomachenko all that he had and had nothing else left in the tank, as a brutal left to the liver ended his chances.

LINARES. Attempting the impossible will be Jorge Linares (44-3, 27 KOs), a tough, no-nonsense banger who likes to stand in front of opponents and trade.

Now it's Lomachenko who will be the smaller man.

But as close as the judges might have had it, the ending was utterly decisive.
