Ryan Reynolds takes a comic high dive into 'Deadpool 2'

Ryan Reynolds aka Deadpool shock fans with a surprise performance in Korea

The same has been done in the video games and to an extent, the first film.

The violence, like the off-colour language, has a same eff-you attitude as the original and there are nearly too many cultural references and in-jokes to count (in one sitting), though everyone and everything from Justin Bieber to James Bond movies to rival DC Comics gets the skewer in the most playful of ways.

Ryan Reynolds spent more than a decade trying to make "Deadpool".

But Fox finally acquiesced, and "Deadpool", in all its R-rated glory, made its long-awaited arrival in movie houses in February 2016.

Yet, nearly miraculously, when Wade Wilson wakes up in the X-mansion and is greeted by his old pals Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Deadpool 2 suddenly snaps into place. Reduced to moping and quoting George Michael's "Careless Whisper", Wade finds renewed objective when encounters with wayward mutant kid Russell (Julian Dennison) and vengeful cyborg-from-the-future Cable (Josh Brolin) test his question: is family more than just an F-word?

Going rogue on the X-Men lands Deadpool in a prison for mutants with Russell and that's when the movie really takes off.

Deadpool director Tim Miller was signed on for the sequel but left after having creative differences with the rest of the team. Both of the "Deadpool" films - unlike each and every comic book/superhero flick - succeed due to their strict avoidance of typical action/adventure/fantasy trappings. Josh Brolin has real presence as Cable, but there's not space here to establish much of his character yet, and as a effect, it's hard to get too much of a handle on him.

For all the whip-smart brilliance of the original, there soon emerged a very real fear that the allure of Wade Wilson's ultra-violent antics could wear thin for a second time. Much to Deadpool's chagrin, Domino's declared superpower is luck, and in short order, she proves to him and us how lots of plain ol' luck is indeed a mighty superpower. Wade decides to help Russell, who becomes a target for the time-traveling mutant Cable (Josh Brolin). Maybe Deadpool isn't flawless by every measure of scrutiny, but it was the ideal thing for the character. "I think going forward it would be an X-Force movie, which would be his team, so to speak". It is full of surprises and incredibly amusing. To the point where if something like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had done it, it would have been heavily criticised, whereas Deadpool 2 might just get away with it, because in part, fandom is more on its side.

In typical superhero story fashion, Deadpool 2 begins by robbing its hero of the power that makes him special.

He's the current cover star of Entertainment Weekly, for instance, while Ryan Reynolds strongly believes that David Leitch's sequel is actually a "family film" masquerading as a superhero movie - just as the Merc's big-screen debut was a love story wrapped up in comic book clothing. And surprisingly, this movie has a lot of heart.

Deadpool 2 is kind of like that zany guy you met at a party once.

Reynolds owns this character and there's certainly enough with the additions of Brolin and Zazie Beetz as Domino that a third movie could be worth exploring. From start to finish - and especially through the now-mandatory post-credit scenes - Reynolds delivers every punch, kick and hard-edged witticism with conviction and relish.
