"Zenit and Roberto Mancini agree to an early end to the manager's contract", the club said in a statement.

Roberto Mancini arrived in Italy Monday saying he was happy to be back and he would see Tuesday if he gets the Azzurri job left vacant after Italy failed to reach the World Cup.

It will be a first role in worldwide management for Mancini, who once handled English Premier League club, Manchester City.

Sky Sports reported on Twitter that 53-year-old Mancini, who held aloft the Premier League trophy with Manchester City in 2011-12, has left his post in Russian Federation after a disappointing season that saw Zenit finish way down in fifth place.

The departure means Mancini, who was appointed Zenit's head coach this season, becomes the top contender to coach Italy, which is rebuilding after failing to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, reports Efe.

Italy next plays Saudi Arabia in a friendly May 28, ahead of games against France and the Netherlands.

He then moved to Lazio but had his biggest success at Inter Milan where he won three successive Serie A titles.

Mancini helped City win their first title in 44 years in 2012.

As well as Mancini, Carlo Ancelotti, Claudio Ranieri and Chelsea's Antonio Conte have been linked with the position, which is now held by caretaker manager Luigi Di Biagio, the coach of Italy's Under-21 side.
