Florida teacher drowns 'nuisance animals' in front of class

Dewie Brewton has been placed on administrative leave from Forest High School in Ocala Forida after footage revealed he had drowned two raccoons in his agriculture class

Video filmed by a student at Forest High School in Ocala, obtained by local outlet WFTV, shows other students filling a large bin with water and lowering a raccoon inside a metal wire cage, later keeping it submerged.

Killing animals is not by any means part of the curriculum of the agriculture class - but bizarrely enough, a teacher in Florida did exactly that along with some of the students.

Dewie Brewton has been placed on administrative leave from Forest High School in Ocala after a freshman student leaked the shocking footage.

In the disturbing video, embedded below, the students help kill the animals.

'It's awful. It still does make me sick to my stomach'.

"He knew while it was happening that it was wrong, so he did it anyway and stood behind people hiding, taking pictures and videos", she said.

The student from Dewie Brewton's class, who wished to remain anonymous, told ABC America the raccoons had killed several of the school's chickens.

According to the agency's website, wildlife animals that are considered a nuisance can be caught using live traps, snares or firearms during daylight hours and where they're allowed. Before that, he made the students were asked to collect water in buckets.

The school board made a public statement letting the district know that, although the authorities indicate the teacher may not have broken the laws, "his actions before students are certainly questionable".

Marion County School District spokesman Kevin Christian announced that Brewton was put on leave amid reports that he drowned the animals.

Maier said the school district is "appalled" by the actions of the teacher. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said they're investigating and will determine if anything illegal occurred.

Forest High School's FAA alumni on Wednesday posted their support for the teacher on Facebook.

"We would like to say that we are 100% behind our advisor and everything he does for our children/students".

'This is a man who would give everything he had to make sure that his children/students are taken care of.

"I don't think that's the way to treat any animal".

They said, "He has always gone above and beyond his call of duty to ensure that his students had everything they needed". He also explained that the raccoons were drowned because those had killed many chickens, which were raised by the students and staff members in a shed behind the school.
