During their meetings, Cruz said the Pope addressed homosexuality, which has been traditionally deemed as a sinful practice in the Catholic church.

As Juan Carlos told CNN, the Pope said, "You know, Juan Carlos, that does not matter". The pope loves you like this. God made you that way and loves you as you are and I don't mind. "'The Pope loves you like this and you should love yourself and not worry about what people say'".

While some have hailed Francis' alleged comments as an open acceptance of homosexuality by the head of the Catholic church, it is possible, if Cruz's claim is true, Francis meant to distinguish between God's love for Cruz as a person and God's stance toward Cruz's homosexual acts.

Mr Cruz was one of three Chilean victims who were invited by the Pope to Rome this month in the wake of a scandal over efforts by the country's hierarchy to cover up clerical sexual abuse.

Official church teaching calls for gay men and lesbians to be respected and loved, but considers homosexual activity "intrinsically disordered".

Mr Cruz said Pope Francis had also told him: "God made you this way and loves you this way, and it doesn't matter to me".

Some have a different interpretation of the Pope's comments.

In comments to the press May 2, Cruz said that the Pope was "sincere, attentive and deeply apologetic for the situation [of sexual abuse]".

"The pope is saying what every reputable biologist and psychologist will tell you, which is that people do not choose their sexual orientation", Martin said in a telephone interview. While we have a way of celebrating our love through civil partnerships and same-sex marriage, we also need to keep working to allow LGBT people of faith to marry in church and declare their love in the eyes of God.

Some of the Vatican investigator's findings were included in the report, according to Chile's T13 television, which acquired a leaked copy. The revised edition says: "This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for majority a trial".

"Sin is sin", the pope said. Not to say that it's all the same, but in each case, welcome, accompany, study, discern and integrate.

After attending a crisis meeting with Francis about the cover-up last week, all of Chile's bishops offered to resign. Cruz said he explained to Francis he was a good person and was not a pervert. It must dismantle all teachings based in heteronormativity, and develop teachings based on the incredible variety of human identities as a reflection of God's infinite creativity.

The LA Times described Francis' reported comments to Cruz as expressing a possibly "new level of acceptance of homosexuality" for the Catholic Church. "And that is a great comfort to many gay and lesbian Catholics who have been told by priests that they have chosen their orientation and are therefore guilty", Martin continued.
