Lava destroys warehouse at power plant site

Blackout not expected in Hawaii even if lava reaches power plant, officials say

Utility crews racing to quench the wells with cold water and cap the well heads with iron plugs before lava could reach them managed to secure the site.

The Puna district's geothermal plant has been closed since shortly after lava began erupting on May 3 through newly opened fissures in the ground running through neighborhoods and roads in an area near the community of Pahoa.

"If we really felt that the plant was at risk of being overrun and could trigger a well being exposed, then that's when we would order the evacuation", said Ige. One other well was plugged with mud.

The molten rock started pouring into the sea over the weekend.

Nonetheless, Travis said he thinks the measures taken so far will be sufficient.

"The status is stable, predictable and understandable", he added.

"I have full confidence that everything is in a very safe state right now", he said.

It shows the glow from fissures as they pushed out lava overnight Monday into Tuesday. The observatory said in a release that the volcano's fissures were actively expelling lava during the period in which the time-lapse footage was shot.

Some "backflow" had entered PGV's property, which is slightly uphill.

Authorities on Tuesday finished capping production wells at the Puna Geothermal Venture plant as lava from Kilauea Volcano encroached on the facility.

Geothermal energy is also considered a clean resource as it doesn't generate greenhouse gas emissions, said Bridget Ayling, the director of Nevada's Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy.

He told the Honolulu television station KHON that he was on the roof of a home helping to put out fires from flying rocks when an explosion a few hundred yards away launched a "lava bomb" his way.

Ferracane said thermal imaging has identified at least one "hot spot" from the former flow.

A spike in gas levels could prompt a mass evacuation, said Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno.

"Part of the message has been to let people know that this is coming down, that possibly they are going to get isolated".

What Other Threats Do People Need To Be Worried About?

Hawaii Electric Light officials also confirmed to ABC News on Wednesday that even if lava destroyed the power plant, there's no danger of a blackout because it was taken offline after Kilauea began erupting on May 3.

Intermittent explosions of ash from the summit, believed to be driven by underground bursts of steam deep inside the throat of the crater vent, are occurring about twice a day, with smaller blasts in between, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) vulcanologist Wendy Stovall told reporters.

Kilauea's eruption, which has already produced almost two dozen lava-spewing fissures, entered a more violent phase at the weekend, producing larger volumes of molten rock from fissures.
