Texas shooting Two faiths one emotion- grief

The Wednesday discussion, for example, will include legislative leaders and the lieutenant governor, judges, the commissioner of the Texas Education Agency, mental health experts, the director of the Texas School Safety Center at Texas State University and members of groups advocating for and against increased gun regulation.

The first meeting, which focused on school and community safety, included nearly two dozen school administrators, politicians, law enforcement officials and an architect with expertise on school design, among others.

Days after 10 people were shot to death at Texas high school, Governor Greg Abbott met with politicians and school administrators on Tuesday to consider proposals to stem school violence in a state where gun-control measures usually sink in the Republican-controlled legislature.

Craig Bessent, an assistant superintendent of the Wylie Independent School District in Abilene, said in an interview that he will take part in the roundtable and that he favored more police or security officers and more screening of students as they entered school campuses.

"You can't get back home, you can't physically help out in any way", Watt said. "There's not a single answer".

But the gun-related groups are just two of the two dozen invited to attend.

The shooting rampage in Florida sparked a gun control campaign by students and parents that has piled on pressure nationwide for lawmakers to enact gun control legislation.

Recalling the attack on ABC television's "Good Morning America", student Trenton Beazely said the shooter "was playing music, making jokes, had slogans and rhymes he kept saying".

One of the roundtable participants, Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks, said there would be pros and cons in allowing school personnel to carry firearms on campus.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., had drills too.

The Republican-controlled legislature is out of session until January 2019, making it almost impossible for the state to implement and fund any major changes that come out of this week's talks.

"We did more today than talk", the governor said. He did not respond to a request for comment.

"Whether you are Republican or Democrat... the reality is that we all want guns out of the hands of those who will try to murder our children", Abbott, who is up for re-election in November, said at the start of the session. Abbott has given no indication that he would do so. Texas also allows rifles to be openly carried in public. I have the deepest sympathy for the teachers and students who died or were wounded in any and all of this countries school shootings. They included measures to buy back guns, improve gun safety education and create a lethal violence protective order to stop a potentially risky person from buying or possessing a firearm.
