Detroit continues slow drop, state sees slight growth

"As most of our peer communities and other smaller cities across Kentucky and the USA are declining in population, we are growing in a steady and sustainable manner".

This surge in population in the Sunbelt probably has been going on - "in spurts" - since the 1950s, said William Frey, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program in Washington, D.C. She says while jobs have been added to the area, the economy hasn't been growing as quickly.

Although population growth might be down, the housing market is not. Tineh said the area is not seeing the kind of growth from foreign-born people that it did from 1990 to 2000.

PSU officials said Thursday that while the data may be different, the university's population researchers utilize similar methodologies to those used by the census.

Connecticut's population change a year ago was the ninth-worst in the country.

"I think it's too soon to tell if the trend will change", Frey said.

And it's not just Chicago that's shedding population.

That slow down in growth has also been reflected at the county level in Harris County - home to Houston - which in 2016 lost its eight-year long claim to the largest annual gain in residents in the country. And Illinois dropped from fifth-largest to sixth-largest state in 2017. Of the state's biggest five cities, Fort Worth also grew the fastest from 2016 to 2017. The eight states that fared worse all lost population, led by Wyoming, which dropped almost 1 percent. The estimate of the county's population has been dropping since 2013.

Those losses have affected Clinton County, dropping the county's population by 2,106 since the 2010 census. That includes Aurora and Carbondale, which each saw a population drop of fewer than 300 people, while Rockford's and Springfield's head counts fell by fewer than 1,000.

Other Texas cities on that list were New Braunfels, which came in at No. 2 with a population rate increase of 8 percent, Pflugerville (No. 3, 6.5 percent), Georgetown (No. 6, 5.4 percent), McKinney (No. 9, 4.8 percent), Flower Mound (No. 11, 4.3 percent) and Cedar Park (No. 13, 4.2 percent).

So despite all the issues residents are so familiar with, from traffic and potholes to sewers, in-fill, multi-story buildings and the like, will Bend top 100,000 residents by the April 1, 2020 Census?
