Sterling Heights will hold its 39th annual Memorial Day festivities on May 28. Gay ad Fran Bowden, Certified Lay Ministers for the United Methodist Church, West Union will deliver the message "They Lived Among Us" in the church at 9:00 a.m. The 5th annual Colorado Remembers event at 10 a.m. will include a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI and the dedication of a new flag pole that permanently flies the Merchant Marine Flag.

A parade will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, starting at the community center. More information is available at MissionContinues.org. New additions include Arabian horses bringing up the rear of the parade, and a 70-foot flag carried by the Royal Oak Football Club.

Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, originated in the 19th Century following the Civil War. The collection has many index materials regarding burials in East Hampton cemeteries, and the staff would be happy to assist in every effort to honor the sacrifices of family and friends. There are three routes: 5K Run/Ruck, 10K Run/Ruck and 30K Ruck March.

Jeannette: The Jeannette American Legion Post 344 will hold Memorial Day ceremonies beginning at 9 a.m.at Jeannette City Hall, top of Clay Avenue; 9:30 a.m.

Fairmount Heritage Foundation will hold a free tour around Fairmount Cemetery which will highlight the many veterans buried in the cemetery.

A veteran's memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Forest City War Memorial Park. To participate in the parade, meet at the Rochester Fire Station, 31020 Academy Road, at 12:30 p.m.

There will be a ceremony and rifle squad salute at 9 a.m.at Veterans Memorial Park, 6 Village Green. Note change in parade route due to construction on Southview Boulevard. The parade will last approximately two hours and will feature military units, bands, floats and antique auto clubs.

That's when - after an opening ceremony - the 80th annual parade will kick off from the corner of Myrtle and Cypress avenues and proceed down Myrtle to Cooper Avenue, where a closing ceremony will be held.

Jamestown will host its Memorial Day services 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 28 at the old cemetery on the edge of town.

Memorial Day services announced for the area

A reception will take place in the Atrium building following the ceremony. The event is free and open to all.

US and ME flags at state facilities statewide should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon on Monday, May 28, in observance of Memorial Day.

Additionally, the Cpl. Christopher Nelson American Legion Post and Auxiliary of Rochester will hold an honorary service at the Ground Mound Cemetery in South Thurston County at 11 a.m. on Memorial Day.

Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 8426 S. USA 287, Fort Collins, will sponsor Memorial Day events on Sunday and Monday, May 27-28.

The Midland Sheriff's Department Honor Guard will be performing a flag folding ceremony, with the flag being presented to Hanes. The featured speaker will be Dean Borg, retired Iowa Public Television host.

The following is a list of Memorial Day observances planned in the region.

Monday, 8:30 a.m. - Ceremony at the foot bridge adjacent to Iowa River Power Company, 501 1st First Ave., in memory of service members who died at sea.

Services at Calvary Cemetery for deceased members of the VFW and VFW Auxiliary.

Monday, 9 a.m. - Memorial Day Mass in the cemetery at St. Bridget's Church, 2136 St. Bridget's Road NE. A barbecue lunch will be served after the ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 10:50 a.m. with the Wrightwood School singers, followed by patriotic songs, a Boy Scout color guard and wreath laying. At the cemetery, memorial ceremony featuring music and recitations and a speech by Oak Park Heights resident Robert Hart, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and 3rd District American Legion commander. The event is open to the public.
