Suspect In Custody After Shooting At Indiana Middle School

As of 11 a.m., police said the suspected shooter, a male student, had been taken into custody.

Police said they did not believe there were other suspects at the time, although they did confirm that threats had been made to other middle schools in the area.

The wounded teacher and student were taken to hospitals in Indianapolis. Authorities did not provide their conditions.

Emergency services in IN are on the scene today after Noblesville West Middle School was put on lockdown when a gunman opened fire.

Noblesville is about 25 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

Some of the questions that have yet to be answered include whether the two people injured were shot and how the events played out in the school in Noblesville, a city of about 60,000 people.

There was some kind of intervention in the school, someone tackled or in some way stopped the shooter. Police are onsite and school is in lockdown. There is a male student who has been detained.

Barnes also confirmed the school does not have metal detectors "as a regular basis of walking into the school". She described him as a student, and that he shot at someone in the room, and one student was injured.

"The school has been completely cleared and the investigation process has just begun", Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt said.

Seventh-grader Ethan Stonebraker said the science teacher likely prevented even more injuries by confronting the shooter, who he said pulled out a gun and opened fire while the class was taking a test. Stonebraker adds, "if it weren't for him, more of us would have been injured for sure".

"All this says to me is insanity has hit IN", one man, whose wife's grandson attends school IN the district, told RTV.

Students were taken to Noblesville High for parents to pick up, state police said.

Anxious mom Erica Higgins was among those to rush over to the school.

"To everyone in the Noblesville community - you are on our hearts and in our prayers", Pence wrote. We'd also like to thank the first responders, law enforcement officials and medical personnel for their efforts and bravery during today's tragedy.

Sen. Todd Young said he was in touch with Gov. Eric Holcomb in regards to the incident.

"Our thoughts are will all those affected by this terrible situation", he tweeted.

The latest school shooting happened just a week after 10 people were killed will at Santa Fe High School outside of Houston, Texas.
