Disbarred New York City attorney and businessman Evgeny "Gene" Freidman, an associate of President Donald J. Trump's longtime lawyer Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony tax fraud in Albany County Court in a deal that reportedly requires he cooperate in state and federal investigations.

Mr Avenatti, who claimed that Daniels was paid $130,000 in "hush money" by Mr Cohen, reported that Suspicious Activity Reports filed by Mr Cohen's bank to the US Treasury showed he had received money from "Ukrainian interests".

As part of the NY probe, prosecutors are investigating Cohen for possible campaign finance violations and bank fraud. Though Freidman reached a deal with NY state, he may be in a position to brief federal prosecutors who are probing Cohen's financial dealings, including his taxi holdings, real estate ventures, and legal and political work for Trump and others.

There is no specific mention of cooperation in a transcript of the plea hearing obtained by ABC News, but prosecutor Ben Clark mentioned "other factors known to the AG" in outlining the terms of the agreement.

He had been accused of failing to pay more than US$5 million (S$6.7 million) in taxes. "Michael is dear dear personal friend and a passive client!"

"Today, the "Taxi King" admitted that he built his empire by stealing from New Yorkers", Attorney General Barbara Underwood said in a statement.

Cohen's role as Trump's personal attorney has come under increasing scrutiny, due in large part to the payment he conceded facilitating to the adult film star Stormy Daniels.

In mid-April the New York Post reported that Cohen once rented Ivanka and Jared Kushners Park Avenue apartment to the Taxi King. The charges could have resulted in years in prison if he'd been convicted.

Freidman also denied that his own legal situation had anything to do with the NY state criminal investigation into Cohen's business dealings, saying he hates "that I have been grouped in this runaway train that I am not a part of!" Wood also reports that Cohen was paid through intermediaries acting on Poroshenko's behalf, even though Cohen was not registered as a foreign agent of Ukraine under the U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act. In pleading guilty to a single count of criminal tax fraud, Freidman will be sentenced to five years' probation, the attorney general's office said. He was called the taxi king in NY.

And Poroshenko was unsure until the last minute how much time and access he would have to the president, the BBC reported, noting Ukrainian officials were furious with Cohen, questioning if they paid him and he was unable to deliver.

Cohen is facing some legal troubles of his own. Together they managed Cohen's 32 taxi medallions.
