Go Ahead and Sleep In This Weekend

Sleeping in on the weekend may be one of the healthiest things you can

If you are having trouble sleeping, then this other study suggests that you go camping for a weekend in order to reset your body's natural sleep cycle; or you can simply put on Baa Baa Land, the "world's most boring film".

On the flip side, those who slept more than eight hours a night had higher mortality rates as well.

Lead by Torbjörn Åkerstedt, professor at the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University, the research team analysed information on health and sleeping habits gathered from 43,880 participants over the course of 13 years.

Their findings stated that those under the age of 65 who had five hours sleep or less at the weekends had a 52 per cent higher mortality rate than those who had six or seven hours sleep.

Regardless, the next time you feel bad about sleeping in more than normal, just think of it as an investment in your long-term health.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults aged 18-60 get at least seven hours of sleep per night. "If you can function on what you get, you are likely getting the right amount of sleep".

The study wasn't ideal and had limitations, including study subjects not being observed directly and self-reporting their sleep habits.

"They sleep as much during weekdays as during weekends whereas the difference is huge in lower age groups", he explained.

"Possibly, long weekend sleep may compensate for short weekday sleep", researchers said. But without making up for lost sleep during the week, those only getting five hours of fewer during the week did not live as long as people who consistently slept seven hours each night.
