Trans Mountain court action continues, John Horgan says

Kinder Morgan had issued a May 31 ultimatum for clarification on the status of the project, which is now mired in legal challenges raised by B.C. Premier John Horgan and also facing Lower Mainland opposition with protests in Burnaby and Vancouver.

Warkentin says he thinks there is still room in the Canadian marketplace for pipeline projects, and hopes the government will look for ways to bring investment back.

Experts in the field argue that the purchase of this infrastructure implies great political risks for the Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with a view to the federal elections of October 2019, as well as implications of a financial nature. "That does not have anything to do with building the new pipeline and the estimates on that are anywhere from $7 [billion] to $14 billion, assuming it proceeds".

Singh says there is a long tradition of non-violent civil disobedience in Canada and he will not condemn people who use protests to express their frustration and anger.

Manuel is preparing for a battle this week, as she expects the federal government will manage to greenlight the project.

A project delay or cancellation would've had US complications as well because some of the 300 million barrels of oil per day traveling through the existing Trans Mountain network feeds refineries in Washington state.

"Today we take a major step forward for Albertans and for all Canadians", said Notley.

Ottawa will pay Kinder Morgan Can$4.5 billion ($3.5 billion) for the Trans Mountain pipeline, which is to move 890,000 barrels of oil a day from landlocked Alberta to the Pacific coast for export overseas, Finance Minister Bill Morneau told a news conference.

The pipeline purchase is expected to close in August.

Rachel Notley spoke at the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Lodge 146 in the city's southeast on Wednesday, and touted the prospect of jobs that would become available once construction on the Kinder Morgan pipeline resumes.

In a statement, Greenpeace campaigner Mike Hudema asserted that "Trudeau is gambling billions of Canadian taxpayer dollars on an oil project that will never be built - a project that Kinder Morgan itself has indicated is "untenable" and that faces more than a dozen lawsuits, crumbling economics and a growing resistance movement that is spreading around the world".

Environmental activists and their allies among indigenous groups say the development will increase the risk of oil spills from the pipeline and from oil tankers along British Columbia's coastline.

The deal has done nothing to change the B.C. premier's mind.

The expanded pipeline will give Alberta, which lies inland, improved access to the ocean and markets in Asia leading to higher tax revenues for both, the province of Alberta and the Federal Government. Morneau said there are interested buyers waiting to pick up the project once Ottawa cuts ties with it.

Morneau insists it's "an investment in Canada's future". "Our court case is against Canada", he said. Completing the expansion of the line to triple its capacity will cost an terrible lot more - the estimate now is $7.4 billion and costs could well escalate with further delay.
