US to appeal ruling that Donald Trump cannot block Twitter users

Trump seize on Florida shooting tragedy to criticize FBI on Twitter

"It would send the First Amendment deep into uncharted waters to hold that a president's choices about whom to follow, and whom to block, on Twitter - a privately run website that, as a central feature of its social-media platform, enables all users to block particular individuals from viewing posts - violate the Constitution", Michael Baer wrote in August 2017.

Trump on Monday unblocked seven plaintiffs who'd sued after the president prohibited them from seeing his active Twitter feed.

The U.S. Department of justice appealed the court's decision in NY for the proposition that the US President Donald trump have to unlock the Twitter user for which he was denied access to his records.

Jameel Jaffer, the executive director of the Knight Institute, said the organization looked forward to defending the May ruling, by Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald of the Southern District of NY, before the appeals court.

Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald (rees BUHK'-wahld) ruled last month that Trump was violating the First Amendment.

"We whined. We complained".

The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University went to court to challenge his habit of blocking people with dissenting political views.

She made clear that people have a right to reply directly to politicians who use their accounts as public forums to conduct official business. "If they have been blocked on the basis of their viewpoints, the White House should unblock them immediately".

"Two days shy of the one year anniversary of my blocking, @realDonaldTrump has unblocked me", tweeted Rebecca Buckwalter-Poza, a writer and legal analyst.

In the court's ruling it was affirmed that the president's Twitter account is a public forum and therefore the general public deserves access. He has blocked many critics from his account, which prevents them from directly responding to his tweets. At the time, a Justice Department attorney agreed that muting would enable Trump to avoid a tweet he doesn't want to read.
