Macron: G7 leaders must be civil as they pressure Trump

"But I'm not President Trump so I can't make decisions for him".

Mr Kudlow described the discontent among U.S. allies as being like a "family quarrel" but said that the White House was confident that talks would bring a solution.

Trump is no fan of multilateralism.

"Maybe, but nobody is forever", Mr Macron said, appearing to cite the fact that Mr Trump will someday leave office.

As one European G7 official put it, this is a "terrible time to have the presidency" of the G7.

The French leader's open challenge to Trump is a far cry from the "very special friendship" he sought to promote during his visit to Washington in late April.

Earlier, Trump tweeted that traditional allies Canada and France were "charging the US massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers".

For the summit to succeed, and for the G7 to carry on, Trudeau needs to "show off the glue" that binds what are still fundamentally like-minded countries.

The comments chime with a Washington Post report that Trump sees May as too politically correct.

"This is a historical ally and we need them, but we didn't concede anything", he said. "For me it's a question of principle".

The French president was speaking alongside the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, who is hosting the G7 summit in Quebec amid sharp disagreements between the U.S. president and the six other leaders of industrialized liberal democracies over trade, climate change and the nuclear deal with Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump holds a joint news conference with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, U.S., June 7, 2018.

Trudeau, for his part, is bracing for some heated exchanges.

Top White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow opposed tariffs before joining Trump's team, but now says he agrees the trade status quo hurts America.

"At the same time, this is why we have G7 meetings".

World leaders gather today in Quebec for a G7 meeting that has been overshadowed by the USA decision to impose steel tariffs on allies.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel previewed the dynamics on Wednesday, telling the German parliament that "it is apparent that we have a serious problem with multilateral agreements here, and so there will be contentious discussions".

The US president also has frosty relations with Trudeau, the summit host.

Officials from some of the U.S.'s closest allies said their level of interaction and coordination on tariff retaliation is exceptional. The Commerce Department said foreign production of steel and aluminum was driving down prices and hurting US producers, creating a "national security threat".

"He doesn't want to be engaged". "This is not the way we do business, and certainly not between longstanding partners, friends and allies".

"Don't prevent other people from keeping it [the JCPOA] and don't push Iran out of it".
