Donald Trump calls for end to Russian expulsion from G7 grouping

"Whether you like it or - and it may not be politically correct - but we have a world to run and in the G7, which used to be the G8 they threw Russian Federation out, they should let Russian Federation come back in", Trump said upon his arrival in La Malbaie, the small town in Quebec that is hosting the weekend's summit.

"China and Russian Federation are permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and are both great responsible countries", Xi said.

Trump's comments on agriculture, his imposition of steel and aluminum tariffs, as well as broader disagreements on trade, climate change and the USA withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement, are setting the stage for some tense G7 talks. "They understand. They're trying to act like, "Well, we fought with you in the wars" but they don't mention the fact that they have trade barriers against our farmers, they don't mention the fact that they're charging nearly 300-per-cent tariffs".

Both leaders also issued a joint declaration pledging to preserve the global accord on Iran's nuclear programme which the United States withdrew from last month.

Macron and Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who also sought friendship with Trump, made it clear they would prefer no consensus to a climbdown on trade.

Russian Federation was removed from the summit in 2014 after its forced annexation of Crimea away from Ukraine.

For its part, Russian Federation allows China to show the USA that it has "other options" in global negotiations, she said.

Mr Trump plans to leave the summit early and will skip G7 meetings about climate change, clean energy and ocean protection.

In today's postings, Trump says he is heading to Canada for G7 talks that will mostly centre on the longtime, unfair trade practices aimed at the United States.

Trudeau has said the Quebec summit offers the G7 leaders an opportunity to find solutions to their many differences. "The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be", he tweeted. The White House then announced Trump would skip some of the G-7 sessions.

"The experience I have with the president of the United States tells me that even though his actions are often criticized, especially recently, including on the worldwide arena and in the economic sphere, he is still a reflective person and he is able to listen and react to another person's arguments", Putin said.

"We are pro-Italian, not pro-Russia", Di Maio told a radio interviewer, while stressing that Conte would make his own decisions when representing Italy on the world stage.

Commentators questioned why the Trump administration would move to protect Russian interests at the expense of punishing them for alleged election interference.

One of his followers hit back with: "Innocent people never talk about their right to pardon themselves".

Despite the current G7 turmoil, Tusk said more unites the group than divides it.

A spokesman at the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, brushed it all off.
