At a gathering of governors of all the states at the White House, Trump said: "Now, the prime minister, who I think is a fantastic man, called me the other day and said we are lowering it to 50%". Or we'll stop trading with them.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said she held talks at the summit with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer over Nafta, US tariffs on steel and aluminium and a Trump administration probe into the national security risks from auto imports.

Trudeau's office, reeling from the abrupt Trump reversal hours after the two men had joked and smiled their way through a fractious G7 meeting, said only that Trudeau had said nothing in his news conference that he hadn't said before.

Donald Trump is embarking for the North Korea negotiations in a slump. "I don't want to waste his time", the U.S. president stressed. "We, the Leaders of the G7" is how the communique begins.

Days after igniting a trade war, Donald Trump declared Saturday that he wants a world free of all tariffs and trade barriers.

Trump's salvo capped a dizzying two days of controversies that began with his suggestion Russian Federation be readmitted to the G7, then what a French official described as a "rant" full of "recriminations" against US trading partners, followed by Trump's denial of any contention with leaders at the summit and his description of their relationship as a "10".

The US president though missed the discussion on environmental protection measures, since he was preparing for a long flight to Singapore, where he is scheduled to meet with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday.

"If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump declared before departing the annual Group of Seven summit, which includes Britain, Italy, France, Germany and Japan.

Trump repeated the call on Saturday, saying "we're looking for peace in the world".

Laura Dawson, director of the Canada Institute at the Washington-based Wilson Center, said it's too early to know what Trump's tweets mean for USA policy. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow would like to focus on its work in the G20 format. "The president will continue to say what he says, on various occasions", said the prime minister.
