Trump and Kim lookalikes hold ´summit´ in Singapore

President Donald Trump called his upcoming summit with Kim Jong Un a "one-time shot" for the North Korean leader to reach a deal over his nuclear weapons, while again tempering expectations for a major breakthrough.

But after North Korea repeated its eagerness to meet, the summit was back on.

Trump alluded to the historic nature of the event during his remarks in Quebec, calling it a "onetime shot" and urging Kim to seize the moment to "do something very positive for his people, for himself and for his family". The site "affords added security and, from the Singaporean, U.S., and North Korean government perspective, has the added benefit of better muzzling protesters and human rights activists", he said. After a gathering marked by both acrimony and banter, The US President left prematurely for Singapore and a possibly more momentous meeting - with North Korea's Kim Jong-un.

Singapore was selected as the host site because it has significant experience in staging major global events, including a summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and then-Taiwanese President Ying-jeou in 2015, the first such meeting in almost seven decades. "We have to get denuclearization, we have to get something going".

'We talked about ending the war, ' Trump said at the White House after his meeting earlier this month with senior North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol.

Asked how hell read Kims intentions so quickly, the president replied: "My touch, my feel". That's what I do. I also think I'll know whether or not it will happen fast. "And if I think it won't happen - I'm not going to waste my time".

SBS News spoke to members of Australia's Korean community and others with a connection to North Korea about their hopes for the summit.

Since Kim Jong Un's New Year's speech, which marked North Korea's turn toward diplomacy, China has more often than not stood on the outside, looking in.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reiterated USA calls for North Korea to completely rid itself of all remnants of its nuclear weapons program before worldwide sanctions are lifted on the pariah nation.

US defence and intelligence officials have assessed the North to be on the threshold of having the capability to strike anywhere in the continental USA with a nuclear-tipped missile - a capacity that Trump and other US officials have said they would not tolerate.

At another point in his talk, Pence also said he told Trump he was praying for him.

The young leader has been swept to centre stage by two new props: his unprecedented nuclear capability and an unconventional U.S. president. So, the president, I can imagine him saying, 'We've agreed on this peace treaty, ' which is what we said in 2005. "We are still, in a way, brothers and sisters", he said.

The Singapore City condominium in Dandong, the main gateway into North Korea in northeastern China, is celebrating its strongest sales in six years thanks to property speculators who see the June 12 meeting as another sign that the reclusive state will soon be open for business.
