Trump signals support for states deciding if pot is legal

Under a bill they introduced, federal law will still apply in states that have not legalized marijuana but, states that have, like Colorado, would now be exempt from the federal Controlled Substances Act which criminalizes pot.

Trump made the remarks ahead of his departure for this weekend's G7 summit in Quebec.

The senators say they have bipartisan support in the Senate and the House of Representatives for the bill. "We will see how the government reacts to it".

"We're looking at it", Trump said.

Donald Trump stated he is likely to support the federal legalization effort despite a warning against it from the coalition of narcotics officer groups.

In January, Sessions rescinded an Obama-era memo assuring state-regulated marijuana dealers that federal prosecutors would leave them alone if they followed state regulations meant to keep pot out of the hands of kids and money out of the hands of drug cartels. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., hold a press conference in the Senate Radio and TV Gallery to discuss bipartisan action they are taking to put marijuana legislation into the hands of state lawmakers Thursday, June 7, 2018.

The Justice Department under Attorney General Jeff Sessions does not support the legalization.

Bill C-45 would allow individuals over the age of 18 to possess up to 30 grams of marijuana for personal use.

"I reject the idea that America will be a better place if marijuana is sold in every corner store", Sessions said in a speech previous year.

Under new legislation unveiled Friday, recreational marijuana would be legalized in New Jersey and the state's medical cannabis program would be expanded. "This is not a legalization bill".

Trump's embrace of the bill is just another blow to his attorney general, who has been a longtime opponent of marijuana.

Trump's support of a lift on the ban would bring in regulation of marijuana sales, and also allow scientists to pursue medical resrarch into its uses.

Democratic Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin said in a statement that he would look closely at the legislation and that the "devil is in the details".

The president hinted that he may endorse the measure, adding that he supports Gardner's efforts to address the discrepancy between state and federal marijuana statutes, which has impacted the industry's access to banking, among other things.

A further 20 states permit use of weed for medicinal use. This odd reality in which selling a joint could land you in jail under federal law and give you a paycheck under state law may not last forever.

The legislation will now go to the House of Commons for more deliberation. Liszewski, though, said it might leave room for that possibility, if the states sending and receiving the product both authorized those operations.
